in gaza city and christiane amanpour in jerusalem, and, alex, let me begin with you. give us a sense of what's been going there on in gaza. >> reporter: good morning, martha. it's been very consistent pummeling of gaza by the israeli air force and a consistent launching of rockets by these palestinian militant groups. we are hearing the bombings going off rather incessantly. just a short while ago, a palestinian group launched a rocket from just a short distance away. this goes on throughout the day, into the night. around 2:00 a.m. we were woken up by this barrage of artillery fire coming from the navy ship just offshore, the israeli ship. the big question today, whether we'll see a cease-fire brokered by egypt and turkey obviously with the pressure of the u.s. and great britain, or are we going to see that ground invasion by israel? prime minister netanyahu said today they are ready to expand their ground operation. we know egypt and turkey are working feverishly to strike some sort of deal, but the signal, the sounds coming out of jerusalem is they aren't finished with this operat

're with us today. and let's get started. first up, we just can't call it the petraeus scandal anymore. today, the u.s. general in charge of allied troops in afghanistan, the top commander john allen is himself the subject of a pentagon investigation of allegedly inappropriate communications with jill kelley. yes, that jill kelley, we're talking about the same tampa housewife whom david petraeus' then mistress paula broadwell apparently saw as rival. a whole new chapter in a saga that since last friday has been one bombshell after another. and so far, all of them have something to do with kelley. she's a volunteer military liaison at the air force base, home of the u.s. central command in tampa, florida. kelley complained to the fbi last spring when paula broadwell was having an affair with petraeus allegedly harassed her with jealous e-mails. petraeus admitted the affair with broadwell but denies any elicit contact with kelley. so does general allen who was scheduled for a senate confirmation hearing this very week to become nato's supreme allied commander. today that's on hold, but he will

of documents belonging to john allen. he's denied any wrong doing. a u.s. official tells nbc news that the documents could connect general allen to jill kelley. she's the same woman whose original complaint about harassing e-mails set off the initial investigation. e-mails that multiple law enforcement sources tell nbc was traced back to this woman, paula broadwell. she's admitted to an affair with dvp dp. last night fbi agents searched paula broadwell's home, the home she shares with her family. she had given them permission to go into the home. they took out boxes and apparently photo es. joining me now is jim frederick, editor at "time" magazine. i heard people joke about this and all the salacious titles. but at the heart of this are some serious and legitimate conce concerns. the president not making any huge pronouncements, but starting with general allen here, the e-mails were exchanged over a two-year span. his confirmation is being held up. that's a big deal. >> it's a huge deal. the story is changing by the hour. every hour there are new allegations as pertains to genera

people in the aftermath of this tragedy. >> ugly. four americans were killed in the aattack including u.s. ambassador chris stevens, two members of the cia. david petraeus appears at both hearings tomorrow morning. there were doubts his testimony would happen given his abrupt resignation, but petraeus reportedly volunteered to testify saying it's the right thing to do. the "wall street journal" has an interesting look into petraeus's final days in the agency including reports of interagency finger points and rising tensions. kelly o'donnell is on the hill, and kelly, two months since the attack and finally top intel players are on the hill. frustration seemed to really be boiling over. what's going on? >> that public hearing that you showed some clips from really showed how politically charged this is. that is not where the secret briefings are taking place. that's a separate thing. it was a show place for the partisan divide over benghazi. when you talk to those on the intelligence committees in the house and senate, there's a sober approach to this as far as getting to the fact finding.

night i say right off the top, can any of us get our heads round this and how much more ridiculous can it get, and lo and behold, it gets more ridiculous. barbara starr, let's try and get to what we believe to be the facts behind all the kind of lurid, titillating headlines. a second general today, petraeus' successor in afghanistan, general john allen, a marine corps four star general, current nominee to be the new nato supreme allied commander, so a very big fish indeed in the military. he is apparently at the center of a scandal involving 30,000 documents, all pages or e-mails or whatever that he exchanged with this second woman, the other other woman, jill kelley. what do we know about the content of this? because it's not as simple as simply 30,000 e-mails, right? >> well, that's the real question. what's really involved here. the spin machine is in full cycle on this one. the pentagon says it's about 30,000 pages of documents. they may not all be e-mails, but a good portion of them are e-mails between allen and jill kelley. pentagon official telling reporters today in his words,
